|Brief Description of Duties:
State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center (SUNY DMC), the only academic medical center in Brooklyn, is located in the heart of one of our nation's largest, most ethnically diverse, urban communities. The SUNY DMC serves a constituency of almost three million residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island. Located on a thirteen-acre urban Campus in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, SUNY Downstate Medical Center comprises the largest medical school in the state, a School of Graduate Studies, a College of Health Related Professions, a College of Nursing and a 376-bed University Hospital. Affiliated medical centers include Kings County Hospital Center, one of the nation’s largest municipal hospitals, VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Staten Island University Hospital, Maimonides Medical Center and Brookdale Hospital Medical Center. The College of Medicine ranks seventh in the number of graduates now engaged in academic medicine. Its faculty has made major contributions to research for which they have received recognition, including the 1998 Nobel Prize as well as several Lasker Awards. Under the general supervision of the Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, the primary responsibilities include leadership and direction for the Facilities Management and Development Department. These responsibilities also include strategic development and management of SUNY Downstate’s physical space providing executive leadership for the management of capital resources dedicated to the acquisition and construction of facilities that support the growth of the organization and facilities maintenance operations. This position also provides leadership to the institutional processes associated with the planning, funding, design, construction, and leasing of an expanding portfolio of Downstate Medical Center (DMC) including Hospital and Clinics facilities. Responsibilities also include overall administration of the Campus and Hospital property and land assets, facilities strategic planning, capital planning, space management, design and construction, and capital construction project management. Responsibilities also include directing aspects of facilities long-term planning, and capital fiscal management. Works cooperatively and collaboratively with other campus offices and departments, key campus and hospital administration, faculty, and staff. Act as the liaison for DMC with local and state regulatory agencies; Office of General Services, Office of State Controller, SUNY Central Administration, State University Construction Fund, Dormitory Authority State of New York for approval and permitting as it relates to facilities. This position requires exceptional business acumen, leadership, organization, and communications competencies.Provide leadership and supervision to management and represented employees, and will manage activities through direct reports having overall responsibility for planning, space management, design and construction. Direct the overall monitoring and success of assigned facilities functions and for integrating these activities with those of other major operational segments of the Campus. Provide leadership for selected, high profile maintenance, repair and renovation jobs and projects, monitoring those jobs and projects for compliance, costs and quality control. Develop and implement systems, procedures, processes, and new approaches that continually promote, foster and assure quality improvement and exhibit a clear customer service commitment to meet the needs of a diverse campus community. Direct multiple-trade and maintenance services provided by campus staff, outside contractors and vendors, and perform other related duties as assigned. Participate in a consultative process with customers/clients representative faculty, staff, and hospital administration to achieve consensus on issues pertaining to the position. Proficient with implementation of information technology systems to improve departments function with the greater institution communication and reporting, include the ability to establish metrics for the department and employee goals that measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
This position includes supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: • Requirements; Bachelor's degree required in architecture, urban planning, engineering, construction management, or a closely related field. Master’s in Business Administration a plus.
• A minimum of 10 – 15 years of progressively responsible management experience involving the Capital development, design and construction, and operations/ maintenance of facilities and infrastructure of a Medical Center. Excellent leadership capabilities, with superior emotional intelligence and problem solving skills.
