Description of Duties:

- Responsible for helping ensure appropriate animal welfare relating to research activities and maintaining regulatory compliance with federal, state, and State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center (SUNY-DMC) policies. - Perform post-approval monitoring (PAM) of ongoing animal research activities for the SUNY-DMC animal research program to include: - Be a resource to the research community; establish a relationship of advocacy between the research community, Office of Animal Welfare (OAW), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and the Division of Comparative Medicine. - Perform PAM sessions of research and support activities; observe research activities, review records, assist in resolving unintentional non-compliances, and coordinate with researchers to develop and implement corrective action plans requested by the IACUC. - Coordinate and participate in federally required IACUC semi-annual site visits for all animal use areas. Communicate deficiencies identified during site visits, work with individuals to develop and implement appropriate corrective action plans to address deficiencies, track and confirm completion of corrective actions, and prepare report summary of deficiencies for inclusion with the IACUC Semi-Annual Programmatic Report for the Institutional Official. - Maintain program compliance spreadsheet with PAM activities and semi-annual site visit deficiencies to track metrics for IACUC use in identifying deficient areas of the program for enhanced training. - Attend IACUC meetings. Prepare individual non-compliance reports, detailing concerns identified, corrective actions completed, suggested additional corrective actions, and determination for reportability to various regulatory and accreditating agencies. Assist the Director, OAW with preparing post-IACUC meeting communications to the PIs and IACUC meeting minutes. - Manage IACUC designated member review (DMR) and Verified Veterinary Consultation (VVC) processes for amendments to protocols; oversee administrative amendment reviews coordinated by the IACUC administrator. - Communicate IACUC and veterinary concerns to researchers and subsequent revisions to address concerns. - Review submissions to identify training needs, and facilitate communication of training needs with PI, DCM trainer, and IACUC Coordinator. - Track IACUC approved exemptions and exceptions. - Member of the IACUC Policy Subcommittee, draft proposed IACUC policies and manage revisions in conjunction with the Director, OAW. - Participate in United States Department of Agriculture, New York State-Department of Health, Drug Enforcement Agency onsite inspections and Association for Assessment and Accredidation of Laboratory Animal Care, International triennial accreditation visits.


Required: Bachelorís Degree; In-depth knowledge of animal research regulations; 7 years of related IACUC, animal research, or regulatory compliance experience; American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or higher. Other: Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment; demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and computer skills; possess great attention to detail, work with accuracy and efficiency, multi-task, prioritize duties, and problem-solve. Preferred: Current Certified Professional in IACUC Administration certification; Experience with electronic protocol management systems; Teaching or public speaking experience.
