The Department of Health Information Management at SUNY Downstate is seeking a full time TH Medical Records Senior Specialist. The successful candidate will:
- Review all inpatient admissions; allotment of correct bill hold codes and clearance of the bill hold codes in the computer; refer appropriate cases to the services.
- Develop and/or updating of coding Policies and Procedures; conducting coding in-service and training for coding staff utilizing coding guidelines, coding clinic and educational material such as DRG updates and coding clinic.
- Respond to all DRG denial inquiries; provide supporting documentation and coding clinic guideline references to dispute appropriately.
- Give input and evaluation for performance programs for each coder; report any updates in coding guidelines that will affect the clinical service; attend training sessions to be involved with changes and keep the HIM abreast of changes.
- Perform monthly in-services throughout the services updating them via the P.I. meeting to communicate with clinicians regarding documentation updates and accuracy; report and report on CMI changes to administration; ensures strict adherence to security and violations and recommends appropriate disciplinary action, where necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION

All successful candidates must undergo various background checks, maintain credentials required for continued employment and adhere to the SUNY-DMC UHB Principles of Behavior.   Clinical Faculty and Allied Health professionals must receive and maintain Medical Board authorization.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
- RHIA or RHIT or CCS Coding certification; ability to make coding decisions based on the use of established coding guidelines.
- Selected candidate must participate in ICD-10 training.

PREFERRED:
- Bachelor of Science Degree with related Health Information Management experience and three (3) to five (5) years direct coding experience in an acute care setting.
