The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full time Physician Assistant. The successful candidate will:
- Assessment and management of Cardiothoracic patients.
- Perform patient histories and physical examinations.
- Order and interpret diagnostic lab tests and radiological studies.
- Write orders for medications or other various therapies.
- Formulate other diagnostic impressions.
- Refer to and converse with appropriate consultation services in regard to patient management.
- Participate in rounds at the start through end of shift.
- Assume all other responsibilities as assigned by the Chief or his/her designee.
- Participate in QAPI, Patient Care / Patient Safety, and Special Projects.
- Functions as first assistant on cardiac surgery cases
- Provides post-operative management of patients in the CTICU
- Assists in preparation and pre-operative management of Cardiothoracic patients.
- Adheres to STS imperatives including pre-op medication management (pre-op BB admin, antibiotic dosing/timing, withholding ACE/ARBs, withholding nephrotoxins)
- Assist with chest tube placement.
- IABP management.
- Impella LVAD/RVAD management.
- ECMO.
- Must be able to work variable and flexible shifts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION

All successful candidates must undergo various background checks, maintain credentials required for continued employment and adhere to the SUNY-DMC UHB Principles of Behavior. Clinical Faculty and Allied Health professionals must receive and maintain Medical Board authorization.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
- NYS Licensure and current registration as a Physician Assistant and Bachelor's Degree from an accredited physician's assistant program, BLS & ACLS Certification.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in critical care.

PREFERRED:
- Previous experience in Cardiothoracic critical care preferred Surgery as a first surgical assistant.
- Experience in Cardiothoracic critical care.
