The Department of Respiratory Therapy at SUNY Downstate is seeking a full time Respiratory Therapist II. The successful candidate will:
- Provide respiratory care for patients under the direction of a physician.
- Make rounds to determine if patient is receiving proper respiratory care.
- Ventilator management.
- Draw and analyze blood for arterial blood gases.
- Record respiratory progress of patients being ventilated mechanically.
- Recording the respiratory status of all patients in the NICU and Pediatrics.
- Assist physicians in ventilating patients who cannot sustain their own respiratory funcition during cardiorespiratory arrests.
- Provide sputum induction.
- Administration of Nitric Oxide Therapy.
- Explain the use of respiratory care devices to patients and/or family members and assist in the use thereof.
- Make entries in patient’s progress record and hospital computer systems.
- Clean and decontaminate equipment once removed from patient use.
- Provide chest physiotherapy and assist in pulmonary lavage/suctioning.
- May work in other areas during times of staff shortages and emergencies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION

All successful candidates must undergo various background checks, maintain credentials required for continued employment and adhere to the SUNY-DMC UHB Principles of Behavior. Clinical Faculty and Allied Health professionals must receive and maintain Medical Board authorization.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
- AAS in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of a two year AMA approved RT program.
- Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
- New York State License.
- BLS (obtained within one year of employment).

PREFERRED:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RR) with NPS, NRP, PALS and ACLS.
